Magic Mike

… aka the Channing Tatum stripper movie.

The first 30 seconds of this trailer alone convinced me I need to see this.

Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey dancing half naked? I’m there.

The Words

The Words stars Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons, Ben Barnes and Dennis Quaid.

Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become.

This is a wonderful cast. Bradley Cooper seems to like those roles of a struggling writer making shitty choices. Since Zoe and Bradley became an actual couple on the set of this film, their chemistry must be great.

I love films and stories that deal with the themes of guilt, conscience, revenge, things of that sort. I’ll be adding it to my must-see list.

The Apparition

The Apparition is a supernatural thriller film directed and written by Todd Lincoln, and starring Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan, Tom Felton, Julianna Guill, and Luke Pasqualino.

I love supernatural thrillers, but sadly, this one looks disappointing.

Can I just say, why did they make Sebastian Stan and Tom Felton look so friggin’ ugly? I mean, they want people to come see this movie, right? Nice to see Tom Felton in a movie other than Harry Potter  though. That might be a draw in itself.

The trailer was going well until they said “it’s like a virus…” and shows a scaley-pus like infection growing in their houses. That’s not scary, just nasty. Then it gets weird. “It spreads from one person to another.” Why though? I thought they were creating a spirit, and that spirits was go to haunt them, scare them. The scene with Sebastian’s character sleeping on the couch looks silly. Is it a spirit than can act as a doppleganger? Ashley’s character sees her closet door go flying from one end of the house to the other. That scene looks silly too. It is now a poltergeist? Then she sees a Japanese horror style ghost creepin’ around. WTF is this thing? What does it actually look like/do? I’m a bit confused, but not in the least bit scared.

The Possession

Yup, another possession movie. As long as it is nothing like The Devil Inside - that movie was so bad.

Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

I love when they put the “based on a true story” line with stories like this…

My mom is a devout Catholic and hates these types of movies. I wouldn’t say I “like” them, but I do watch a lot of them. I’ve seen possession/exorcism films from different countries, and even when they are based on the same story (like the Anneliese Michel story), they are never quite the same.

Some are so bad (see The Devil Inside, The Unborn, 11:11), but some are done well (The Last Exorcism of Emily Rose, Paranormal Activity, Constantine, and of course The Exorcist).

The fact that Sam Raimi is involved with this one leads me to believe that this will be one of the good ones.

Piranha 3DD

This looks so ridiculous that I have to see it.

Some of the scenes look so disturbing – like the one where they guy and girl are going to get it on and  then you see something writhing in her belly – and then you  see him chop off off his, well, you know. That’s some messed up shit.

This trailer goes a much more comedic route than the one for the first film – with David Hasselhoff providing most of the comic relief. But with the whole 3DD thing, I think they are disguising a soft core porno as a summer blockbuster….

I’ve read a bunch of the youTube comments under the trailer and they crack me up. Many of them say that this is so stupid, why would they make this movie, why would Christopher Lloyd star in something like this…. listen, why do they make movies like this? Because people GO TO SEE THIS RIDICULOUSNESS. Not every movie wants to take itself seriously or is gunning for an Oscar nomination. Some people (or just Americans I guess) want to go to the movies to shut off their brains and just see some blood, guts, and boobies.

The Great Gatsby

What do Gatsby, the 1920′s, and Jay-Z have in common?

Until now nothing – but this trailer manages to change that.

Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild” blasts as the women in flapper dresses and men in suits drinking martinis party like it’s nobody’s business. Really interesting choice to be associated with the film of the classic novel. The second song is a bit more fitting (Jack White’s “Love is Blindness”) yet many are finding the choice of music absurd.

Music aside, this trailer is visually stunning and well crafted. Most everyone knows the story of The Great Gatsby, so it’s not like spoilers are a problem.  The cast is phenomenal: Leonardo DiCaprio is Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Amitabh Bachchan as Meyer Wolfsheim and Brendan Maclean as Klipspringer.

Luhrmann is the mind behind William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, so of course this is going to be a feast for the eyes. It will be in 3-D as well, which is an interesting choice, but since it is a Luhrmann film, not unexpected.

I will definitely be looking forward to seeing this film when it comes out at the end of this year.

Madea’s Witness Protection is an upcoming 2012 American comedy-drama film directed, written, and produced by Tyler Perry. This will be the fourteenth film in the Tyler Perry film franchise, and the seventh in the Madea franchise.

George Needleman, a high level CFO is at the center of a Ponzi scheme in New York City. He is being accused of spearheading the scheme involving the mob and has to enter his family into a witness protection program. The program’s location in a place that absolutely no one will think to look for them: Madea’s house down south with her brother Joe.

I like the character of Madea. Yes, she is over-the-top and stereotypical, but she is funny as hell. Yes, there are those people who do not like Madea because she is debasing the black woman and “setting us back may years” or however Spike Lee says it. But this caricature is for entertainment and not to be derogatory. In my opinion, at least. She is pretty entertaining.

The comedy also stars Eugene Levy, Doris Roberts, Tom Arnold, Denise Richards, Danielle Campbell, Devan Leos, Romeo, John Amos and Marla Gibbs.

Mansome

Mansome is a documentary film directed by Super Size Me’s Morgan Spurlock, and executive produced by actors/comedians Will Arnett and Jason Bateman.

Mansome takes a comedic look at the contemporary issue of male identity—expressed through the varying grooming methods different men adopt. It features actors, comedians and everyday men and women offering their personal pros and cons of various looks and methods of grooming. Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan Magazine, Kate White; cultural anthropologist, Dr. Helen Fisher; and numerous experts on male appearance and grooming weigh in with interesting facts about men in the modern era; women now share power and responsibility both at the workplace and at home, and men are now looking to express themselves through the grooming choices only men can make.

The Intouchables

I saw this trailer for the first time while waiting to see the film ‘Bully” in theirs. It stood out to me primarily because it was in French – that was the first time I had seen a foreign trailer before a domestic film. I saw it again when I went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

This trailer does everything right – it is an even blend of humor and heart and leaves you wanting more.

The Intouchables (which translates literally as Untouchable) is a French film directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano.

Fun fact: In just nine weeks after its release in France in November 2011, it became the second most successful French film of all time in the French box office. So now I know why this film is being marketed to American Audiences in theaters (The Weinstein Company purchase the rights to the film to play in English-speaking countries). Another fun fact: Omar Sy received the César Award for Best Actor in February 2012 for the role of Driss (defeating Jean Dujardin, nominated for The Artist). He is the first actor of African descent to receive this award.

The movie tells the development of the improbable friendship between Philippe (François Cluzet), a wealthy tetraplegic, and Driss (Omar Sy), a young offender of Senegalese descent, who is hired as his live-in carer.

If I teared up just from the trailer, those who know how I am at sappy/heartfelt movies know how I’ll be watching this one.

Total Recall (2012), Yet Another Remake of a Classic

Yes, I was just as appalled upon hearing about it.

I am on the verge of writing a scathing letter to Hollywood – that would never get read, of course – about how there are starving screenwriters all over Hollywood and New York that are coming up with original (albeit maybe not the best) ideas everyday, so stop touching the classics. STOP WITH THE GODDAMN REMAKES. Just stop.

With that said, I went into this trailer wondering how much I’d hate it.

But… I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not going to lie: this looks certifiably bad-ass. Directed by Underworld series director Len Wiseman, this takes a different turn from the original. Unlike the original 1990 Schwarzenegger film, the plot of this new version does not go to Mars, and contains strong political overtones. In addition, the film also blends Western and Eastern influences together, due to the fact that the two nation states, New Shanghai and Euroamerica are battling for political power. Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, and Wiseman’s wife Kate Beckinsale make up the (much better looking than the original) cast.

Check out the trailer:

Just to see Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel battle it out makes it worth it.

The film will be released in August.
